Dust, pollen, bird droppings and the film that builds up over a year all cut into what your installation produces. The loss is gradual, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed.

01 What settles on a module
Solar modules and photovoltaic installations are exposed to the weather and to environmental influences all year round. Dust, pollen, bird droppings, moss and other deposits can settle on the surface and reduce how effectively the system can be used.
Not all of it washes off again. Rain rinses the open middle of a module and runs past the bottom edge, so the dirt gathers in a band along the lower frame – a narrow line, and the worst possible place for one.
That band shades the row of cells behind it, and a shaded row holds back the ones wired in series with it. Which is why an even film across the glass costs less than it looks, and a finger of grime at the bottom edge costs more.
02 Purified water, soft brushes, no detergent
With professional solar and photovoltaic cleaning, we remove this soiling gently and thoroughly. We use appropriate cleaning methods to protect the sensitive surface of the modules and achieve a clean result.
Purified water carries nothing dissolved in it, so it dries without leaving marks and asks for no detergent to do its work. Nothing abrasive touches the glass, and nothing is left behind for the next fortnight of dust to stick to.
The anti-reflective coating is what makes a module a module rather than a sheet of glass under which cells happen to sit. It is thin, it is easily scoured, and it does not grow back – which is the whole reason for working this way rather than faster.
03 Access, and staying off the glass
Most of the installations we clean sit on roofs, which is where we work in any case. The access equipment is the same as for a sweep or a gutter, and so is the care taken with the tiles on the way across.
We do not walk on modules. They will take a person’s weight without breaking, and that is precisely the trap: the damage is in the cells under the glass, invisible from above, and it shows up months later as a panel that no longer pulls its share.
04 How often it is worth doing
Regular cleaning helps to keep the modules clean over the long term and to allow the best possible light yield. For installations with heavier soiling in particular, professional cleaning can be worthwhile in order to restore the efficiency of the system.
How often depends on what is around you – a field that is worked in dry weather, a stand of trees, a busy road, a shallow pitch that never quite sheds what lands on it. We are happy to advise you individually and to assess on site whether – and at what intervals – cleaning your installation is advisable.
You can see which half is done
A farm roof, worked from the ridge outwards: telescopic poles, rotating soft brushes and purified water fed up the pole. Nobody stands on the modules. Halfway along the array the difference stops being subtle – a dull film on one slope, the cells showing through the glass on the other.
